The day we've been waiting for

Taking delivery of a new helicopter is always a special moment. This time, however, the handover marked the beginning of a much bigger story. A JB Aviation client took delivery of a new Bell 429 at Bell Textron’s headquarters in Mirabel, Canada, and instead of opting for standard transport to Europe, set off on an extraordinary journey to Poland in it.

The four-person crew faces thousands of kilometers, over 40 hours in the air, and a route that takes them through some of the most challenging and spectacular regions in the world: northern Canada, Greenland, Iceland, Norway, and other European countries. This is an expedition in which precise planning, constant weather analysis, and a willingness to adjust initial plans are just as important as the pilots’ experience and the helicopter’s capabilities.

The weather determines the route

From the very beginning, the crew realized that on a journey like this, the next steps aren’t determined solely by the original plan. Low cloud bases, heavy precipitation, limited visibility, and strong winds forced them to change their original route even before takeoff.

After waiting several days for the right conditions, the Bell 429 took off from Mirabel and headed for northern Canada. The journey took them through the nearly uninhabited regions of Quebec and Nunavut—over vast forests, thousands of lakes, the tundra, and places that very few people ever reach.

The first long day of travel came to an end after more than seven hours of flight and covering 1,583 kilometers. The crew arrived in Inukjuak, a small town located on Hudson Bay. The next leg, via Salluit, took them to Iqaluit—the capital of the Nunavut and the last major stop before beginning the flight toward Greenland.

The Bell 429 on a Challenging Transatlantic Flight

Even the early stages of the expedition demonstrate just how well the Bell 429 performs during flights lasting many hours. The spacious cabin and ample cargo space made it possible to carry rescue and survival equipment, supplies, and personal items needed while traveling through remote Arctic regions.

Under these conditions, there is no room for chance. Every refueling, every landing, and every decision regarding the route ahead requires meticulous preparation. The crew continuously analyzes forecasts, adjusting the plan to the conditions on subsequent legs of the journey. The most important goal is not to stick to the schedule at all costs, but to reach Poland safely.

PThe expedition members now face one of the most eagerly anticipated and challenging stages—Greenland—followed by a flight across the North Atlantic toward Europe.
