About a company
Bell Helicopter Textron Inc. is one of the most important manufacturers of civilian and military helicopters in the world. The company manufactures its reliable aircraft on the basis of long-standing experience from many military conflicts in which Bell attack helicopters took part. In its rich history, Bell delivered more than 35,000 helicopters to its customers all over the world.
The history of the company dates back to 1941, when its founder, Larry Bell employed Artur Young, a young design engineer and inventor (in 1930, Young demonstrated his first flying helicopter). Thanks to that decision, the company that had been known for producing planes has become the biggest competitor of Sikorsky, the first American helicopter manufacturer.
The helicopter which for many years was the symbol of American domination in this field of aviation was a Bell product designated as Model 47. That machine, as the first rotary-wing aircraft in the history of world aviation, was granted, in 1946, civilian certificate and type certificate. Despite the strong competition from such manufacturers as Sikorsky, Kaman or Hughes, for the decades to follow, Bell gained numerous successes. It is the Bell team that developed and implemented in the 1960s the first mass-produced attack helicopter, the legendary AH-1 Cobra.
After the success of the 206B civilian helicopter its derivatives were created, 206L series models, model 407, a twin-engine variant Bell 427 and at last, recently, the latest Bell 429.
Bell Helicopter is still improving and upgrading consecutive variants of the AH-1 series attack helicopter, which is the basic attack helicopter of the US Marine Corps. As a result of multi-year cooperation between Bell Helicopter and Boeing, the first aircraft in history with tiltable engine nacelles was built, the V-22 Osprey tiltrotor. At this moment, Ospreys are one of the essential means of fast tactical transport for the American armed forces.
